Great Britain is
situated on two large islands and a number of smaller ones. They
are located to the north-west from the European continent. It is
a rather small country according to the European standards.
It will be a
mistake to call this country England. Its correct name is The
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
This name was given to this country because it consists of four
parts — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
This was historically predetermined. During the course of
history these kingdoms were united in one country under the rule
of the Kings of England.
And it is quite clear that there are four nationalities in Great
Britain — the English, the Scotch, the Irish and the Welsh.
Consequently, four languages circulate on the territory of the
country — English, Welsh, Gaelic and Irish.
The official
language is English.
The territory of the country is rather small — only 54 million
square kilometers. Nobody in Britain lives more than one hundred
and twenty kilometers from the sea. That is why the inhabitants
of the country are considered to be one of the most sea-loving
nations in the world.
Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the West and
North-West, by the North Sea in the East and by the Irish Sea in
the West. In the South, the country is separated from France by
the English Channel which is 32 km wide at its narrowest point.
There are no high
mountains in Great Britain. But mountainous regions exist in the
north of Scotland and in Wales. The highest peak in the country
is Ben Nevis in Scotland. Its height is 1343 m.
The country is small, so there are no long rivers in it. The
most famous river in Great Britain is the Thames, where London,
the capital of the country is situated. The other famous rivers
are the Severn and the Clyde.
You cannot see vast forests on the territory of the Isles. But
of course, the most famous of the British forests is the
Sherwood Forest, because the legendary robber, Robin Hood lived
there.
So, the rivers are small, the forests are not deep, the
mountains are not high — such is the landscape of the United
Kingdom. And the country has almost no vast mineral resources —
except coal or some building materials.
